Safety Checks & Maintenance Requirements for Automatic Doors.
Automatic Doors – Do you know your legal obligations?
Power operated pedestrian doors and their associated safety protection equipment require regular recorded compliance checks and maintenance to ensure they remain safe, protecting your building visitors and users.
Like most electrical machinery with moving parts, automatic or powered doors need a service log to prove they are safe to use by all building users.
This is an essential requirement under Health and Safety legislation, and further British Standards apply to the installation and careful maintenance of automatic pedestrian doors and their sensor and safety devices. Any maintenance undertaken on a powered or automatic door system must be by a person qualified to the BS EN 16005 competency exam.
As part of our preventative maintenance plan, our technicians will check compliance of all the associated safety measures necessary for your automatic door type and building environment, such as side screen protection, barriers and safety sensors to detect movement and presence.
All MGS technicians are trained and accredited to BS EN 16005 under the ADSA (Automatic Door Suppliers Association) scheme to ensure your doors to conform to current legislation and standards and remain safe in use.
Maintenance of automatic powered pedestrian doors is necessary under Workplace Health & Safety legislation and BS EN 16005
How Often Should I Get My Automatic Doors Serviced?
MGS can advise on the frequency and program of maintenance required for your type of automatic door, ensuring you meet your responsibilities as the building occupier.
Your handover documents from the door installer or the manufacturer’s manual should also outline the frequency and program of maintenance required.
It is recommended that automatic doors are serviced at least annually to protect building users and ensure their safe and efficient operation. A weekly inspection by the building occupier is also necessary.
How Should I Record My Automatic Door Maintenance Or Repairs?
Each automatic door asset requires its own Log Book, which is usually provided by the manufacturer, to record any checks, repairs and maintenance.
As an MGS service customer, every quarter we will provide a detailed Service Report on the assets we maintain for you.
Regular planned door servicing helps keep your business premises safe and compliant, your door assets protected in the event of breakdown, and your maintenance costs to a minimum.
Building Occupier Safety Checks For Automatic Doors
Records of these safety checks should be retained for at least a year. ADSA have helpfully produced these video guides to basic occupier safety checks for power operated automatic sliding doors and swing (hinged) pedestrian doors.
